What are Inlays and Onlays?
What is the difference between Inlays, Onlays and Crowns?
  • Inlays are designed to complete a defect inside your tooth.
  • Onlays are designed to cover and protect portions of the outer surface of your tooth.
  • A crown is a “cap” and designed to cover and protect your whole tooth.
What types of teeth troubles are inlays and onlays used to treat?

Inlays and onlays are designed to restore larger cavities and provide a more durable and aesthetically pleasing restoration. Conventional fillings are designed to repair smaller cavities and defects in your teeth and typically have a shorter lifespan than inlays and onlays.

What is the procedure to install my Inlays and Onlays entails?

The procedure is very similar to a regular cavity filling. After removing the diseased and decayed structure of the tooth, the cavity shape is designed to receive the restoration. Impressions are then made and a temporary restoration is placed. The final restoration is fabricated in the dental laboratory to precisely match your tooth color and structure. In the second visit, the inlay or onlay is finely adjusted to fit the tooth and bite and then permanently bonded onto the tooth.

What are the materials used in Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays can be fabricated from ceramic (porcelain) or gold. Porcelain is very durable and can easily match your tooth color and characteristics precisely. Some patients prefer gold inlays and onlays on their back teeth due to the long and documented history in the use of gold restorations. Many gold restorations have lasted for over 30 years!

What are the benefits of Inlays and Onlays?

Inlays and onlays are a far more precise and durable restoration, offering a longer lifespan and better preservation of your teeth structure.

What are the risks of inlays and onlays?

Inlay and onlay procedures typically carry the same risk as traditional restorations and do not carry any excessive risk. Inlays and onlays are a more conservative treatment alternative to crowns

What are the alternatives to inlays and onlays?

Conventional fillings are the most common alternative to inlays and onlays. Conventional filling are more affordable but do not provide the expected superior aesthetics and lifespan of inlays and onlays

How much do Inlays and Onlays cost?

Inlays and onlays cost is similar to the cost of porcelain veneers and crowns. They typically cost more than a regular filling but will also last much longer and surpass traditional fillings in durability and functionality.

What are the post-treatment limitations?

No specific post treatment limitations have been noted. Like any other bonded restoration including crowns, patients are advised not to use the treated tooth for 24 hours. After 24 hours most patients can expect to and are encouraged to resume normal activities. Occasionally, some post treatment sensitivity may be experienced; these typically subside within one to two weeks.

What is a Temporary (Provisional)?

A temporary or a “provisional” is an interim restoration that is usually fabricated from resins. It is designed to serve for a shorter period of time and to be used until the final restoration (crown or porcelain veneer) is ready to be bonded to your tooth.

What is the purpose of a Temporary (Provisional)?

The primary purpose of the temporary restoration is to be utilized while your final restoration (crown or porcelain veneer) is ready to be bonded to you tooth.

Temporary restoration (provisionals) allow you to:

  • Function comfortably
  • Enjoy optimal aesthetic results
  • Examine the design and make adjustments and improvements in appearance and functionality
  • Provide a trial for the changes and other needed modifications with your dentist while your final restoration is ready
When is a Temporary necessary?

Temporary restorations are always necessary whenever you need a restoration to your tooth that must be fabricated in the dental laboratory, such as crowns, porcelain veneers, inlay and onlays.

How are Temporaries made?

Temporary restorations can be fabricated at the dental laboratory or at your dental office. Several techniques can be utilized in the fabrication and is usually based on your condition and the perseverance of your dentist.

What materials are used to make Temporaries?

Temporary restorations are usually made from resin materials and can be matched to your natural tooth color. In certain instances, where high esthetic demands are required, they can be made of ceramics.

What is the quality of a Temporary (Provisional)?

The quality of a temporary or “provisional” is optimal for short periods of time (typically weeks to months, depending on the treatment condition). Temporary restorations are optimal only when there is a need for continuous observations and or modifications by your dentist. By nature, the resin material deteriorates over time and requires continuous modifications and adjustments to ensure preserving your tooth structure.

How long do I use a Temporary (Provisional)?

Temporary restorations are designed for a limited duration and that varies from weeks to months based on the complexity of your treatment.

It is very crucial to note, that you MUST be under close observation by your dentist while you are using the temporary restorations. Temporary restorations deteriorate over time and must be consistently modified and closely observed by your dentist. Lack of maintenance for temporaries may cause serious damage to your teeth

What is the placement and removal procedure of a Temporary?

Placement and removal of temporary restorations is quite simple and often pain free. The procedure does not typically require a Novocain shot!

What is the cost of a Temporary?

The cost of temporary restoration is significantly less than the final restoration. Temporary restorations can be an affordable way to start your treatment, however, they have a very limited lifespan and will eventually require a permanent restoration.

What are the post-treatment restrictions for temporaries?

Post treatment restrictions include the following:

  • Avoiding sticky foods such as caramels and chewing gum
  • Consult with your dentist regularly to prevent the temporaries from becoming loose
  • Remain under close observation by your dental specialist to limit any complications that might occur

What is the procedure?

The procedure starts with the removal of the decayed structure of your tooth, if needed, modifying the tooth shape to receive a durable bonding or white filling, and then the placemen of bonding or white filling. The whole procedure is often completed in the one visit.

What are the benefits of a Bonding or White Fillings?

Bonding or white fillings are very conservative restorations and provide excellent aesthetic and functional results. They are considered to be very reliable restorations. They are also more affordable than some other treatment alternatives.

What material is in a Bonding or White Fillings?

Bonding and white fillings are highly reinforced composite resins that are designed to bond to your natural tooth structure. They have been in use as dental restorations since 1980’s and have been continually evolving and significantly improving over the years.

How long does it last?

The duration of service of bonding and white filling varies on an individual bases and from one tooth to another within the same mouth. The duration is dependent on the size of the bonding or cavity, location in the mouth and the quality of work provided by your dentist or dental specialist. The average duration of bonding and white fillings can range from a few years to several years of trouble free service when properly maintained.

What are the alternatives?

Treatment alternatives vary based on each individuals situation. Porcelain veneers are the preferred alternative for aesthetic treatments. Inlay and onlays can be used to restore a defect or decay in your back teeth. Porcelain veneers, inlays and onlays are a more durable restoration, and the preferred restoration in certain situations

What are the risks of a Bonding or White Filling?

Bonding and white fillings are very low risk restorations and one of the most conservative approaches, if applicable. Occasional post treatment sensitivity may develop like most other dental restorations, and would usually subside within a week or two.

How much does Bonding or White Filling cost?

The cost of bonding or white fillings is very reasonable and varies based on the extent of each individual restoration. The less extensive the restoration, the less expensive the treatment as the cost primarily depends upon the amount of time that your dentist has to spend crafting and perfecting each individual restoration.

How can an existing bite problem affect a white filling?

Bonding and white fillings may not be the best options for those who grind their teeth consistently and suffer from bruxism hobbits. Bonding and white fillings do not compare with the strength of the natural tooth structure and may not be a suitable restoration technique for people who suffer from the above conditions.

Any post-treatment restrictions or foods to avoid?

One of the major advantages of bonding and white fillings is that they are one of only a few dental restorations that are designed to be used immediately after the treatment is completed. Patients can typically resume normal activities upon completion of the restoration.

How often should I have preventative care?

Dr. Halim and his staff will determine the frequency of your visits for Preventative Care Therapy based upon your individual oral health conditions. According to your needs, your visits schedule may vary from few to several months.

Does Brushing alone provide proper care for my teeth?

Yes and No. Dental plaque forms on your teeth on a constant basis and the bacteria in plaque regularly attack your teeth and gums. Dental plaque is the number one enemy for your teeth and gingival tissue. It is the fundamental reason for developing decay (caries) and periodontal “gum” diseases. When plaque is not thoroughly removed, it hardens into a deposit known as calculus or tartar which can require additional treatments to remove. Daily brushing and flossing are critical in maintaining oral health and will minimize the formation of calculus but don’t entirely prevent it. The necessary frequency of your preventative maintenance therapy is determined by the efficiency of your home oral care practices and variations in the body’s chemistry that affect your tendency to develop oral diseases. After a complete evaluation of your oral health a determination will be made on the necessary frequency of preventative care visits to maintain optimal oral health. If your oral health declines, you may be rescheduled for more frequent appointments.

What can be expected during Preventative Care Therapy visits?

Your professional teeth cleaning will be performed by one of our hand-selected hygienists. Each of our world-class Hygienists are dedicated to maintaining your oral health and will perform a very thorough cleaning while being gentle and considerate of your comfort. During visits, Dr. Halim will examine your mouth for any abnormal changes and measure the depth of the gum pockets around your teeth. Your teeth will be examined for signs of decay and any other dental problems that may have developed and check the way your teeth fit together when you bite down. Dr. Halim will discuss any changes that may have occurred in your general and dental health history with you.

What is accomplished with professional teeth cleaning?

Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are usually performed by a registered dental hygienist. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:

  • Removal of Calculus (tartar): Calculus is a hardened deposit that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Removal of Plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. Dental plaque is the fundamental cause of tooth decay (caries) and periodontal diseases!
  • Tooth Polishing: Leaving with your teeth surface smooth and polished. Not only your teeth will feel cleaner and brighter, but also, the smooth surface will minimize stain and plaque accumulation.

What are Periodontal Diseases?

Periodontal diseases are any destructive diseases of the gums and the surrounding jawbone that gradually destroy the bone supporting your natural teeth and untreated results in tooth loss.

There is also a strong correlation between Periodontal Diseases and Cancer, Birth Defect, Cardiovascular /Heart Diseases and Diabetes!

Periodontal Disease is a very slow process that often remains unnoticed and untreated. 70% of the US population suffers from untreated periodontal diseases.

How are Periodontal Diseases diagnosed?

Periodontal diseases are diagnosed during your periodontal examination by either by Dr. Halim or one of his skilled dental hygienists. This type of exam should always be a part of your regular dental check-up and should be done at least once a year.

What is involved in a periodontal examination?

A periodontal probe (small dental instrument) is gently used to measure the sulcus (pocket or space) between the tooth and the gums. The depth of a healthy sulcus measures three millimeters and does not bleed. As periodontal disease progresses, the pockets usually get deeper and involve the supporting bone structure

Dr. Halim or one of his hygienists will use pocket depths, amount of bleeding, inflammation, tooth mobility, etc., to make a diagnosis of one of the follwoing:

Gingivitis

Gingivitis, while not technically a periodontal disease, is the pre stage of periodontal disease. The problems are still limited to the gums where plaque and its toxin by-products irritate the gums, making them tender, inflamed, and likely to bleed.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis means that your jawbone has started to deteriorate! Plaque hardens into calculus (tartar) and as calculus and plaque continue to build up, the gums begin to recede from the teeth. Deeper pockets form between the gums and teeth and become filled with bacteria. The gums become very irritated, inflamed, and bleed easily. Slight to moderate bone loss may be present.

Advanced Periodontitis

As Periodontitis worsens the teeth lose support, accordingly the gums, bone, and periodontal ligaments continue to deteriorate. Unless treated, the affected teeth will become loose and may be lost in the future. Generalized moderate to severe bone loss may be present.

How can periodontal disease be prevented?

The best way to prevent cavities and periodontal disease is through the combination of daily tooth brushing and flossing along with regular professional cleanings and examinations. Even with the most diligent home dental care, people can still develop some form of periodontal disease. Once this disease starts, professional intervention is necessary to prevent its progress.

Initial Periodontal Therapy consists of Scalling and Root Planning (known as Deep Cleaning). The procedure is done by one of our had-selected Dental Hygienist under close supervision by Dr. Halim. The outcome of this initial treatment is re-evaluated after 21 days to track the results of the treatment and progress of the disease. Following successful periodontal disease treatment, periodontal maintenance therapy is required to prevent further progression of the disease.

Other important factors affecting the health of your gums include:

  • Tobacco usage
  • Diabetes
  • Stress

  • Clenching and grinding teeth
  • Medication
  • Poor nutrition

What types of maintenance should be practiced after treatment?

Once your periodontal therapy has been completed, Dr. Halim will recommend that you have regular maintenance cleanings (Periodontal Maintenance Therapy), usually four times a year. At these cleaning appointments, the pocket depths will be carefully checked to ensure that they are healthy. Plaque and calculus that is difficult to remove with home care will be removed from above and below the gum line.

Is Periodontal Maintenance Therapy Really Necessary?

Periodontal diseases are the fundamental cause for tooth loss in adults in the United States. Periodontal diseases have recently been associated with many other health risks such as cardiovascular\heart diseases and diabetes. Once you have experienced periodontal diseases, it is important to remain dedicated to a permanent schedule of proper home and professional oral care. Periodontal maintenance will maintain your optimal oral health and prevent the need for a more comprehensive, periodontal surgical treatment.

With through and proper periodontal treatment and an ongoing program of periodontal maintenance therapy, our doctors can give you the opportunity to maintain your strong, beautiful smile and overall good health!

What does the process of getting Dental Implants involve?

The process of getting dental implants requires a number of visits over several months. X-rays, impressions (molds) and CT Scans are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant. A surgical guide is developed to insure accurate placement of your dental implant.

Often a bone CT scan is performed prior to the dental implant placement.

While the area is numb, the implant will be surgically placed into the bone and allowed to heal and integrate itself onto the bone for few months.

After healing, the artificial teeth are precisely manufactured and anchored to the post (dental implant). Custom-made hardware components (custom abutments) are secured on the dental implant to anchor your designed tooth restoration.

How long will Dental Implants last?

Dental implants are very strong, stable, and durable and will last many years. However, like teeth and other dental restorations, they require regular follow up and maintenance.

Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth colored crowns) are by far the most popular today. They are highly durable and will last many years. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.

Gold crowns are also available and are very durable functional restorations, however, they lack the natural porcelain appearance.

Vital whitening (bleaching) means the teeth discoloration is confined exclusively to the enamel. Vital teeth bleaching can cause teeth hypersensitivity and gum irritation. Both reactions are usually temporary.

Non-vital teeth whitening is used for discolored teeth that have been treated with a root canal treatment. The peroxide formulation remains inside the teeth between appointments and whitens the teeth from the inside out.
