What is the process that a patient undergoes?

A new patient begins the “All On Four” procedure with comprehensive consultation with Dr. Halim (one hour or 90 minutes) including X-rays. The treatment process requires a case work-up, a CT scan, and fabrication of the prosthesis (new teeth).

The surgical dental implants placement and securing of the new teeth are then completed under sedation in the same day. After the healing period for dental implants (3-4 months), the final restoration is constructed and attached permanently.

Three yearly maintenances are required thereafter, to ensure long-term, healthy and successful treatment.

What will I experience leaving the office after the teeth are in?

It is hard to describe or predict an individual’s feelings. However, many of our patients have described it as a life changing experience. What differs between Implant Dentures and “All On Four”?

What is the difference between Inlays, Onlays and Crowns?

• Inlays are designed to complete a defect inside your tooth.
• Onlays are designed to cover and protect portions of the outer surface of your tooth.

What types of teeth troubles are inlays and onlays used to treat?

Inlays and onlays are designed to restore larger cavities and provide a more durable and aesthetically pleasing restoration. Conventional fillings are designed to repair smaller cavities and defects in your teeth and typically have a shorter lifespan than inlays and onlays.

What is the procedure to install my Inlays and Onlays entails?

The procedure is very similar to a regular cavity filling. After removing the diseased and decayed structure of the tooth, the cavity shape is designed to receive the restoration. Impressions are then made and a temporary restoration is placed. The final restoration is fabricated in the dental laboratory to precisely match your tooth color and structure. In the second visit, the inlay or onlay is finely adjusted to fit the tooth and bite and then permanently bonded onto the tooth.

What are the materials used in Inlays and Onlays?

What is a Temporary (Provisional)?

A temporary or a “provisional” is an interim restoration that is usually fabricated from resins. It is designed to serve for a shorter period of time and to be used until the final restoration (crown or porcelain veneer) is ready to be bonded to your tooth.

How are Temporaries made?

What is Sleep Apnea?

What causes Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by repeated collapse of the patient’s upper airway during sleeping, either completely or partially preventing air from reaching the patient’s lungs. Central sleep apnea (CSA) is caused by a failure of the brain to instruct the body to breath properly.

What are the signs and symptoms of Sleep Apnea?

Signs and symptoms of sleep apnea may involve one or more of the following:

• Snoring

How can Sleep Apnea be diagnosed?

A “Pulse Xoimeter” device is an excellent initial screening device for sleep apnea. Initial diagnosis and can be obtained through your dental specialists office. Sleep test center studies, ENT consultations and Rheometer testing are more in-depth diagnostic procedures that are utilized throughout the treatment.

What treatments can be done?

CPAP is the best treatment alternative. For those who cannot comply with CPAP treatment there are a few dental appliances that are alternatives and help ensure an increase of oxygen flow to the brain during sleep. “Tap Appliance I & III”, “Somnodent”, and “Herbst Appliance” have proven to be effective treatment alternatives.

What surgery options are there for sleep apnea?

Surgery is typically reserved for severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) at the recommendation of and ENT specialist. A patient should be sure to seek a second opinion prior to undergoing surgery as the success rates of such surgeries are rarely higher than 65% and often deteriorate with time, averaging about 50% only.

What other health conditions can be associated with Sleep Apnea?

Untreated sleep apnea affects the patient’s mental and physical well-being, impairs judgment, alters moods, reduces the ability to learn, negatively impacts information retention and may increase the risk of serious accidents and injuries.

What is TMJ Disorder or TMD?

TMJ (temporomandibular joints) is part of your bottom jaw structure. They are the most sophisticated and delicate joints in your whole body and control all of your jaw movements during chewing and all other functions.

What is Dental Distress Syndrome?

Dental distress syndrome is a term that describes a disorder resulting from the misalignment of the TMJ and the musculatures that control them. These same structures are responsible for balancing the head on the spinal column. Dental distress syndrome describes a combination of ailments from head to stomach disorders.

How often should I have preventative care?

Dr. Halim and his staff will determine the frequency of your visits for Preventative Care Therapy based upon your individual oral health conditions. According to your needs, your visits schedule may vary from few to several months.

Does Brushing alone provide proper care for my teeth?

Yes and No. Dental plaque forms on your teeth on a constant basis and the bacteria in plaque regularly attack your teeth and gums. Dental plaque is the number one enemy for your teeth and gingival tissue. It is the fundamental reason for developing decay (caries) and periodontal “gum” diseases. When plaque is not thoroughly removed, it hardens into a deposit known as calculus or tartar which can require additional treatments to remove. Daily brushing and flossing are critical in maintaining oral health and will minimize the formation of calculus but don’t entirely prevent it. The necessary frequency of your preventative maintenance therapy is determined by the efficiency of your home oral care practices and variations in the body’s chemistry that affect your tendency to develop oral diseases. After a complete evaluation of your oral health a determination will be made on the necessary frequency of preventative care visits to maintain optimal oral health. If your oral health declines, you may be rescheduled for more frequent appointments.

What can be expected during Preventative Care Therapy visits?

Your professional teeth cleaning will be performed by one of our hand-selected hygienists. Each of our world-class Hygienists are dedicated to maintaining your oral health and will perform a very thorough cleaning while being gentle and considerate of your comfort. During visits, Dr. Halim will examine your mouth for any abnormal changes and measure the depth of the gum pockets around your teeth. Your teeth will be examined for signs of decay and any other dental problems that may have developed and check the way your teeth fit together when you bite down. Dr. Halim will discuss any changes that may have occurred in your general and dental health history with you.

What is accomplished with professional teeth cleaning?

Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are usually performed by a registered dental hygienist. Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:

• Removal of Calculus (tartar): Calculus is a hardened deposit that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface. Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
• Removal of Plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth. It is a colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums. Dental plaque is the fundamental cause of tooth decay (caries) and periodontal diseases!
• Tooth Polishing: Leaving with your teeth surface smooth and polished. Not only your teeth will feel cleaner and brighter, but also, the smooth surface will minimize stain and plaque accumulation.

What are Periodontal Diseases?

Periodontal diseases are any destructive diseases of the gums and the surrounding jawbone that gradually destroy the bone supporting your natural teeth and untreated results in tooth loss.

There is also a strong correlation between Periodontal Diseases and Cancer, Birth Defect, Cardiovascular /Heart Diseases and Diabetes!

Periodontal Disease is a very slow process that often remains unnoticed and untreated. 70% of the US population suffers from untreated periodontal diseases.

How are Periodontal Diseases diagnosed?

Periodontal diseases are diagnosed during your periodontal examination by either by Dr. Halim or one of his skilled dental hygienists. This type of exam should always be a part of your regular dental check-up and should be done at least once a year.

What is involved in a periodontal examination?

A periodontal probe (small dental instrument) is gently used to measure the sulcus (pocket or space) between the tooth and the gums. The depth of a healthy sulcus measures three millimeters and does not bleed. As periodontal disease progresses, the pockets usually get deeper and involve the supporting bone structure

Dr. Halim or one of his hygienists will use pocket depths, amount of bleeding, inflammation, tooth mobility, etc., to make a diagnosis of one of the follwoing:

Gingivitis

Gingivitis, while not technically a periodontal disease, is the pre stage of periodontal disease. The problems are still limited to the gums where plaque and its toxin by-products irritate the gums, making them tender, inflamed, and likely to bleed.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis means that your jawbone has started to deteriorate! Plaque hardens into calculus (tartar) and as calculus and plaque continue to build up, the gums begin to recede from the teeth. Deeper pockets form between the gums and teeth and become filled with bacteria. The gums become very irritated, inflamed, and bleed easily. Slight to moderate bone loss may be present.

Advanced Periodontitis

As Periodontitis worsens the teeth lose support, accordingly the gums, bone, and periodontal ligaments continue to deteriorate. Unless treated, the affected teeth will become loose and may be lost in the future. Generalized moderate to severe bone loss may be present.

How can periodontal disease be prevented?

The best way to prevent cavities and periodontal disease is through the combination of daily tooth brushing and flossing along with regular professional cleanings and examinations. Even with the most diligent home dental care, people can still develop some form of periodontal disease. Once this disease starts, professional intervention is necessary to prevent its progress.

Initial Periodontal Therapy consists of Scalling and Root Planning (known as Deep Cleaning). The procedure is done by one of our had-selected Dental Hygienist under close supervision by Dr. Halim. The outcome of this initial treatment is re-evaluated after 21 days to track the results of the treatment and progress of the disease. Following successful periodontal disease treatment, periodontal maintenance therapy is required to prevent further progression of the disease.

What types of maintenance should be practiced after treatment?

Once your periodontal therapy has been completed, Dr. Halim will recommend that you have regular maintenance cleanings (Periodontal Maintenance Therapy), usually four times a year. At these cleaning appointments, the pocket depths will be carefully checked to ensure that they are healthy. Plaque and calculus that is difficult to remove with home care will be removed from above and below the gum line.

Is Periodontal Maintenance Therapy Really Necessary?

Periodontal diseases are the fundamental cause for tooth loss in adults in the United States. Periodontal diseases have recently been associated with many other health risks such as cardiovascular\heart diseases and diabetes. Once you have experienced periodontal diseases, it is important to remain dedicated to a permanent schedule of proper home and professional oral care. Periodontal maintenance will maintain your optimal oral health and prevent the need for a more comprehensive, periodontal surgical treatment.

What are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are ultra-thin (0.3 mm) pieces of durable, tooth shaped porcelain shells. They are custom made to match the shape and color that you desire. What is Tooth Whitening?

Teeth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment, which changes the color of natural tooth enamel and may be an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.

Are there different types of teeth whitening?

Once the cause of your teeth stain is confirmed, Dr. Halim can prescribe the appropriate teeth-whitening product. There are two types of teeth whitening techniques: vital and non-vital.

Vital whitening (bleaching) means the teeth discoloration is confined exclusively to the enamel. Vital teeth bleaching can cause teeth hypersensitivity and gum irritation. Both reactions are usually temporary.

Non-vital teeth whitening is used for discolored teeth that have been treated with a root canal treatment. The peroxide formulation remains inside the teeth between appointments and whitens the teeth from the inside out.

Are there different Teeth Whitening products?

Teety whitening is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. There are so many teeth whitening products available that it helps to talk to Dr. Halim to find out which would best fit your needs.

What does the process of Teeth Whitening involve?

In office teeth whitening “bleaching” is a one-hour process. Custom bleaching trays are also provided for future touch-up and additional bleaching.

Your teeth are polished and dammed (Special Isolation to prevent bleaching material getting in contact with your gums).

Teeth whitening “bleaching” gel is applied and activated with special light for 15 minutes. The process is repeated 2-4 times depending on desired color to be achieved and teeth tolerance.

Take home approach consists of wearing the custom trays every other day, for 45 minutes. The best results are obtained up to 3 months.

At the first appointment, impressions (molds) will be made of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic, trays. At your second appointment, you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary.

It is not unusual to experience teeth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.

Is Teeth Whitening permanent?

Teeth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up maybe needed that varies from one individual to another.
