What are Dentures?

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and tissue. It is made to closely resemble your natural teeth or make improvements in your smile and function. (up to 10 years or more)

How does one determine if they are in need of Dentures?

Dr. Halim will evaluate if you are a candidate for dentures by examining your teeth, gums, and jawbone. Your dentist will check for signs of gum disease and decay. X-rays will be taken to determine the health of your teeth, gums, and bones.

Who is a candidate for Dentures?

You may be a candidate for dentures if you have a lot of missing teeth. Many people need dentures after experiencing severe tooth loss, extensive decay and severe periodontal (gum) disease.

What are the different types of Dentures?

Conventional full dentures are appropriate for patients who have lost all of their teeth on their upper or lower jaws.

Immediate dentures are another type of a complete denture. Immediate dentures are worn after your teeth are removed and while your gums heal. This type of denture does not involve a period without teeth.

Immediate dentures require dental visits before your tooth extraction to plan and fabricate the dentures.

Partial dentures are removable replacements for a series of extracted teeth. Partial dentures are held in place by attachments to adjacent natural teeth. The adjacent teeth may be crowned to increase stability.

How long does the process take?

Dentures are typically created and fitted over the course of several appointments. Dr. Halim will take highly accurate impressions (molds) and measurements, which are used to create your custom denture. Several “try-in” appointments may be necessary to ensure proper shape, color, and fit. At the final appointment, Dr. Halim will precisely adjust and place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit. It is normal to experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and possible speech and chewing difficulty, however this will subside as your muscles and tissues get used to the new dentures and accommodate them.

What are Dentures made of?

Dentures are made of various materials to simulate the appearance of your natural teeth and gums. Dr. Halim will specifically match the color of your natural teeth and gums to that of your custom made dentures. Professionally made dentures are constructed of premium, long-lasting products, low-staining coatings, and high impact acrylic and resin bases. With proper care, your dentures will last for a very long time.
