What is a Crown?

A Crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape, size and color. A crown protects the structure of the teeth that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.

Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain (tooth colored crowns) are by far the most popular today. They are highly durable and will last many years. Please keep in mind that like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Porcelain crowns are made to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting beautiful smile.

Gold crowns are also available and are very durable functional restorations, however, they lack the natural porcelain appearance.

The average life span of a crown restoration is approximately 12-15 years. Regular maintenance and check-ups enhances the life span of your crowns.
